- July 4 - The Phoenix Ditch Company is formed by Jack Swilling, Thomas Barnum, and John T. Alsap.
- October 20 - John T. Alsap presides over a meeting at the home of John Moore to select a townsite. A committee is formed to investigate the options.
- October 26 - Committee members John Moore, Martin P. Griffin, and Darrell Duppa recommend a 320-acre site, which is accepted, and Duppa recommends the name Phoenix. The Salt River Valley Town Association is formed to develop the original townsite.
- December 17 - Sale of townsite lots advertised in Prescott Miner. [1]
- December 23 - First town lot at the corner of First and Washington Street sold to Judge William Berry for price of $116.[2]
